Last night, while jogging, I was almost hit by a car driven by an elderly man who went through a red light.
My Ipod was only two songs into Shuffleplay when it happened, and the song that was playing during the incident was the progressive rock classic "Limelight" by Rush, off the band's 1981 album Moving Pictures, and something I can say I haven't listened to in many years.
I couldn't help but think had the man struck me, that perhaps the last sound I would hear on earth would have been the distinctive voice of Canadian rocker Geddy Lee.
This does not give me solace. Not that his voice isn't heavenly.

I was jogging today, WITHOUT my ipod, and I didn't see a car coming. I was pooped and sweaty and I just wanted to get home. It really wasn't a close call, but still...
TO ALL JOGGERS AND BICYCLISTS, PLEASE DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR IPOD WHILE WORKING OUT. INSTEAD, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS.
Sorry, missy: I need my music.
It doesn't take a statistician to isolate the common variable in both joeyp's and missy's near accidents, and it's not Geddy nor the iPod.
To be certain, however, I've established a control group by cuing up Moving Pictures on my own iPod, which like me, hasn't left the house in days, and doesn't even own a pair of running shoes. So far, not a car has come near me. Not counting a certain candy-apple Fiat Barchetta.
I think we forgot the root cause of the near miss--the driver running the red light.
