A New Year; My First Post

As Americans have become collectively more obese over the past decade, many in this still-glistening new year may have a serious resolution to slim down and shed some weight.

I'm pleased to report that the Wall Street Journal, only two days into 2007, already has achieved a sleek and arguably sexy new look by unveiling a new five-column-length edition, one column smaller than the old (and not as sexy) WSJ. !Que guapo!

If you like superb reporting and great writing, you have to like the WSJ no matter what its size is, except for the editorial page, of course, which I believe is written by people with cavemanlike foreheads and copious amounts of back hair.

So the WSJ used to be the fat chick with the great personality that *everybody* liked anyway, and now it's the slim, sexy Star Search spokesmodel with the graduate degree.

But anyway, we here at The Cup of Joe need to call attention to a great front-page story in today's edition that we read on the train this morning. It's about a gay couple, a couple who have been together for 20 years, a couple who bought Gerald Ford's childhood home and renovated it, and how, over the years, the Fords have visited the home and have been so gracious and thankful to the men for renovating the structure. It's a nice story. Oh, the men made the Fords' Christmas card list as well, and just last year the men called Ford's office on his birthday to pass on their good wishes. To their surprise, according to the story, Ford jumped on the line and struck up a conversation and thanked them for some recent remodeling work.

I wonder if Ford would have supported the right of these two men, together for two decades, to be legally married?

Isn't it nice to read about non-gay-baiting Republicans?

Huh, TWSJ is a great paper? It's more like the Rethuglican (read Republican) Pravda. What is wrong with you?

What is wrong with me? If only I had the time to fully explain! Maybe we should just meet for coffee sometime.
